As a newborn photographer and mother of one, I’m often asked about the items I found indispensable during those precious early months. Whether you’re preparing for your own baby’s arrival or searching for the perfect gift for a loved one, it helps to know what’s genuinely useful. Below is my curated list of essentials that made life with a newborn easier, cosier, and more enjoyable.

This genius invention was a lifesaver! The Snugglebundl is perfect for carrying your baby, making the transition from car seat to home or buggy to car seat completely seamless. No more waking your little one during those all-too-precious naps. It’s soft, supportive, and an absolute game-changer for busy parents.
Gone are the days of wrestling your baby into a bulky coat or worrying about overheating in the car. A car seat blanket stays put inside the car seat (it has holes for the straps to come through) and it is a practical solution that keeps your baby warm without the need for thick layers. It’s quick, safe, and oh-so-handy for on-the-go families.
3. Star coat
If there’s one item I couldn’t do without, it’s the star coat. Unlike traditional coats, which can be a hassle to put on, this blanket wraps around your baby in seconds – no fiddling with tiny limbs! It’s versatile enough to use in the car seat and cosy enough for chilly walks. I loved it so much that I bought every size until my little one was mobile.
This might not seem like an obvious choice, but hygiene spray has been a staple in my life as a mum. I recommend buying a large bottle and refilling a smaller travel-sized one to keep in every bag. It’s perfect for giving your baby’s hands a quick spritz after they’ve touched something germy. I discovered this tip from another mum, and it’s been a game-changer for peace of mind.
For those early weeks when your baby is just starting to explore the world, a black and white book is a brilliant tool. These high-contrast images are perfect for developing their focusing skills and introducing them to the joy of books. It’s a simple yet meaningful gift that’s both educational and entertaining.
6. Baby massage course
If you’re looking for an experience-based gift or something to treat yourself, a baby massage course is worth its weight in gold. Not only does it help soothe your baby, but it also strengthens the bond between you. I still use the techniques I learned to this day – they’re calming for both mum and baby!
As a parent, you’re forever worrying about whether the room is too hot or too cold for your baby. This clever gadget acts as a nightlight and room thermometer, glowing different colours to indicate if the temperature is just right. We found it so useful that we had one upstairs and one downstairs, so there was no need to keep unplugging and moving it. Peace of mind, day and night!
8. A Lovevery subscription / single box
It’s a luxury gift (about the same price as a Jo Malone candle!) that’s packed with expert-designed toys for their stage of development to help them thrive through every growth milestone
Those adorable little fingers and toes can quickly feel like claws! An electric nail file is a safe and gentle way to keep your baby’s nails short without the stress of traditional clippers. It’s quiet, effective, and makes what could be a nerve-wracking task so much easier.
10. Personalised blanket from My 1st Years (or similar)
A personalised blanket is not only practical but also a keepsake you’ll treasure forever. Soft, cosy, and embroidered with your baby’s name, it’s perfect for tummy time, cuddles, or as a thoughtful gift for new parents. My 1st Years offers gorgeous options, but there are plenty of similar brands to choose from as well.
11. Muslins
Muslins might not be the most exciting item, but trust me – you can never have too many! From mopping up spills to using as a light cover, muslins are a lifesaver. When all the laundry piles up (and it will!), you’ll be so thankful to have spares. Stock up – the more, the merrier!
12. Changing caddy
A changing caddy for keeping nappies, wipes, creams, and other essentials organised and within reach. Whether you’re at home or on the go, it’s a portable solution that makes nappy changes quick and fuss-free. No more frantic searches for that elusive pack of wipes!
13. The Najell Sleep Carrier
Carry cot – tick! Carrier – tick! Playmat – tick! A mum friend swears by the Najell carrier, and I can see why… it allows for seamless transfer of a sleeping baby without disturbance. It’s versatile, doubling as a carrycot, baby nest, and playmat, and is compact, fitting all prams. Additionally, it is machine washable and easy to maintain, making it ideal for busy parents
14. Stretchy sling
A stretchy sling is a wonderful way to keep your baby close while keeping your hands free. It’s especially handy during those early newborn days when they love to be held all the time. Comfortable, snug, and easy to use, a sling allows you to bond with your baby while still getting things done. Ideal for busy parents!
15. Vitamin D spray
The health visitor will recommend you start giving your baby supplements early on. Don’t bother with the disgusting Abidec, it’s gross! We started on vitamin D drops but actually found the spray much easier to get into baby’s mouth.
16. A meal subscription or similar
Because often the last thing you want to think about is doing the shopping / making food.
17. A sleep sack like the Ergopouch
A premium gift that parents will appreciate – and should hopefully means everyone gets some rest…
18. Saline spray and Snufflebabe
For when they inevitably get that first cold *heart breaks*, saline spray helps to loosen mucus. Rub some Snufflebabe on their feet (from 3m+) and pop a drop of Baby Olbas on their outer layer of clothing so they can breathe a little easier. For a triple whammy, pour some Snufflebabe bath bubbles in their bath to soothe their airways.
The early days of parenthood can be a whirlwind, and having the right tools can make all the difference. Whether you’re an expectant parent or someone looking to gift something thoughtful, these items are practical, meaningful, and guaranteed to be appreciated. Parenthood is all about finding what works for you and your baby, but these essentials are a fantastic place to start.
